The UCLA International Institute stands in solidarity with African Americans, people of color and all who are direct and indirect victims of systemic racism, discrimination, inequity and injustice.
The killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and countless others — and the disproportionate number of deaths among Blacks due to Covid-19 — are vivid reminders that deep-rooted and structural flaws in our society do not just threaten the life chances, but take the lives, of our fellow citizens. This is horrifying, unjust and violates the fundamental values that make us human.
Racism is global, as witnessed in the marches that have taken place worldwide in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. The UCLA International Institute pledges to continue to promote research, education and service that strive for a more equitable, diverse, inclusive and just world, and we pledge to care about peoples near and far with kindness and compassion.
